The New Medical Uses of Fructus Ligustri Lucidii and its Pharmaceutical Formulations

- In our study, Fructus Ugustri Lucidi (FLL) has been found to be useful for maintenance of Ca balance and improvement of bone properties in aged and postomenopausal women for prevention of osteoporosis. Ethanol extract of FLL improved Ca balance and intestinal Ca absorption in ovariectomized rats (the animal model for postmenopausal osteoporosis). It also improved bone properties (bone mineral density, bone mineral content and biomechanical strength) in aged normal and ovariectomized rats and its protective effects on bone properties are influenced by the level of dietary Ca intake. Significant improvement of trabecular and cortical bone mass were found when ethanol extract of FLL was used in combination with high Ca diet. Ethanol extract of FLL accelerated the formation of calcified matrix, increased extracellular Ca and P depositions and enhance the process of mineralization in rat osteoblast-like UMR 106 cells. FLL possesses the potential to be developed into pharmaceutical preparation or supplement for treating osteoporosis.
