An automatic screening tool for diabetic retinopathy in patients with diabetes mellitus

Summary
Diabetic retinopathy is the damage to the retina caused by complications of diabetes mellitus, which can lead to blindness. It is an ocular manifestation of systemic disease which affects up to 80% of all patients who had diabetes for 10 years or more. Diabetic retinopathy could be reduced if there was proper and vigilant treatment and monitoring of the eyes. According to the guideline of American Academy of Ophthalmology, diabetes patients are supposed to be screened for diabetic retinopathy at least once a year for mild case and at least twice for more severe case for prevention or treatment. Our group has developed a software that can be attached to the retina camera to carry out automatic screening for diabetic retinopathy. This software can also grade the severity of the disease according to the guideline of American Academy of Ophthalmology and provide additional information for guiding treatment. The development of a fully automated diagnostic machinery for diabetic retinopathy will improve the role of primary care physician in the management of diabetes patients.

1. We have integrated all key clinical factors for diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. The program can be operated with a standard digital fundas camera, the results can be obtained automatically and immediately. 2. We will be able to get a severity grading of diabetic retinopathy, which is useful for assessing the degree of deterioration of the disease. 3. The technology has the potential to reduce the waiting time for specialist (both ophthalmologists and diabetes specialists) as more early management of diabetes patients can be off loaded to primary care physician. 3. This technology is suitable for rural area where few qualified healthcare professionals are available.
