Systems and Methods for Enhancing the Performance of Streaming Media over TCP

Summary: Media streaming is conventionally transported over specialized streaming protocols. However there are increasingly more content providers who offer their contents for streaming playback using non-streaming protocols such as HTTP over TCP. As TCP was not designed for media streaming it will create performance problems in streaming even if the network has more than sufficient bandwidth for the streamed media data. This invention presents solutions to this new class of performance problems in streaming media over TCP which can be readily deployed in today’s networks and applications.
