Methods for Fabricating Zeolite Micromembranes

Summary

Zeolites are microporous crystalline aluminosilicate molecular sieve that have pore sizes ranging from about 0.3 to 1 mm. Due to their uniform, molecular-sized pores, they can separate molecules based on their size, shape and polarity. They can therefore act as ''molecular sieves''. Membranes made of zeolites and molecular sieve possess good thermal and chemical stabilty, and thus have a number of practical applications.

This inventionintroduces a new preparation method for zeolite and molecular sieve micromembranes with excellent mechanical, thermal and separation properties( gas-gas, gas-liquid, vapour-liquid, liquid-liquid, ion-transport), a new preparation method for three dimensionzeolite membrane enclosed microchannel structure. It also claims a new method for low temperature removal of organic templates for activation of micromembrane and a new method for re-activating fouled membranes.

Technology Benefits

1. Allows the fabrication of inorganic zeolite and molecular membranes without causing crack and defect formations
2. Mechanically, thermally, chemically stable
3. New membrane architecture
4. New technology was employed

Technology Application

- Membrane microseparator for gas-gas, gas-liquid, vapour-liquid, liquid-liquid separations in microsystem
- Proton transport membrane for microfuel cell
- Membrane for chemical, electrochemical and biological sensors
- Drug delivery device

Title: Methods for fabricating zeolite micromembranes
Usefulness: Methods for fabricating zeolite micromembranes
Summary: For activating a zeolite membrane useful in the separation of gases and liquids and as selective barriers for sensors.
Novelty: Zeolite membrane activation for, e.g. separating gases and liquid, involves placing the membrane in contact with fluid mixture containing ozone and having specified temperature when the mixture is in gaseous or liquid
