- Summary
- A protein isolated from the Chinese yam Dioscorea opposita that stimulates estrogen and progesterone release in vitro and in vivo but does not stimulate the proliferation of breast and ovarian cancer cells is disclosed. The protein exhibits anti-osteoporotic activity in vivo. Also provided are the procedure for isolation and purification of the protein and the N-terminal amino acid sequence of the protein.

Summary: The bio active peptide is used in composition and medicine for achieving therapeutic effect chosen from increasing serum level of estradiol, estrogen, and/or progesterone, treating osteoporosis and menopausal syndrome in a subject, preferably human at menopause, perimenopause or postmenopause period having menopausal syndrome and osteoporosis, and improving cognitive function and stimulating a splenic mitosis response (all claimed) and chitanase activity and modulating immunity in a subject e.g. female apes, humans, dogs, cats and chickens. The peptide is used in the form of e.g. ingestible tablets, buccal tablets, capsules, elixirs, suspensions, syrups or wafers.
