FK506 Binding Protein, FKBP59, was initially characterized as a component of steroid receptor complexes. FKBP59 has been identified as a member of the Hsp90/Hsp70 steroid receptor complex which has been used to differentiate between the active and inactive forms of steroid receptors. FKBP59 is alternatively termed FKBP52, HBI and Hsp56 in literature. FKBP59 is an immunophilin of the FK506 binding type whose cellular function is not fully known, but is thought to play a role in the folding and cytoplasmic/nuclear distribution of steroid receptors. FKBP59 (Hsp56) exhibits stress protein properties and has been shown to have increased expression in response to heat shock and ischemia.
