The ability to custom tailor surface plasmon resonances of metallic nanorods via their geometry has made nanorods a prominent platform for the design of novel nanomaterials with wide ranging potential applications. Characterization of nanorod geometries within their native solution environments is essential for targeting nanorod properties to specific application and for improved monitoring of nanorod synthesis. Determination of physical dimensions of nonΓÇö spherical (in particular cylindrical and ellipsoidal) nanoparticles in their solution environment is often critical for performance of the specific task these particles are designed for. Yet there are very few options to obtain this parameter from solution measurements.The analysis approach developed by the inventors utilizes data from in-situ measurements of diffusive rotation and translation of nanoparticles and extracts the overall nanorod length with good reliability. It has direct application in the field of nanotechnology, especially for physical, optical and biological activities.
