USF inventors have used graphene quantum dot nanoparticles to evaluate their potential for cancer diagnosis and therapy. Attaching cancer -targeting drugs to the nanoparticles will enable small tumor detection, real-time drug imaging, and the release of drugs when radiation is used. These advantages make thenovel nanoparticles a promising strategy for the early detection of cancer, simultaneousmonitoring of the drug in the body, and specific targeted treatment with minimal toxicity ofthe drug to healthy cells. The innovative and fast synthesis method used by our inventors to produce the nanoparticles will further expand the current alternative strategies to treat cancer.
