Our inventors have designed an inexpensive, quick, and simple approach to synthesize water-soluble GQDs via an oxidation cutting process directly from graphite. This one-step chemical reaction takes as little as 90 minutes to complete with a high yield ofGQDs. These GQDs have an average particle size of between about 1 nanometer (nm) and 20 nm as well as a monodisperse size distribution. Tests with live cells that have been labeled using GQDs have demonstrated their long-term stable capability ofbioimaging application. The novelty of this invention offers a promising therapeutic and diagnostic tool for various diseases, with an emphasis on cancer cell imaging.
