Use of Augmented Reality for Enhanced & Efficient Communication Technologies
Intuitive & efficient user interface Easily integrated into existing devicesApplicable to a large marketEnhanced communication experience
Audio teleconferences or videoconferences Communication devices (smartphones, tablets, augmented reality devices, etc.)
Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara have developed a communication interaction paradigm based on augmented reality that enables a remote collaborator to control his/her viewpoint onto a remote scene and communication information with visual references such as identifying objects, locations, directions, spatial instructions, etc. This new platform can be easily integrated into already available devices such as smartphones, tablets, or head-mounted displays. Further, it requires minimal training for use and no preparation of the environment, making it applicable to anyone, from consumer to expert. This technology will enable easier and more efficient remote communication and collaboration.

Background Natural forms of communication are not possible in current communication technologies, which are limited by verbal communication through live audio or videoconferencing, or to sharing static images. These forms of communication lead to cumbersome and mostly ineffective descriptions of a person’s task and environment, especially when collaborating remotely on physical tasks. While some forms of commercial communication systems offer improved features, such as telestration, they remain limited in the quality and level of interaction possible. It would be beneficial to have an interface that allowed for a communication interaction through augmented reality that allowed for a more immersive experience.
