Method for Preparing Tapered Block Copolymers

Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara have developed a method for preparing olefin-containing tapered block polymers with a copolymer structure. This method comprises polymerizing a first olefin monomer with a second olefin monomer in the presence of a catalyst to produce a tapered block copolymer structure. These polymers have great promise for use in the design of blends of polyethylene and polar engineering plastics because the polarity gradient along their chain will reduce the energy between chains and lead to better mixing.

Title: Block copolyolefins possessing a tapered structure
Usefulness: Block copolyolefins possessing a tapered structure
Summary: The method is used for preparing a polymer, which comprises a tapered block copolymer structure, for use in composition selected from thermoplastic elastomer, adhesive, polymer coating, oxygen barrier film and polymer blend compatibilizer (claimed).
Novelty: Preparing a polymer for use in e.g. thermoplastic elastomer, polymer coating and oxygen barrier film, involves polymerizing two different olefin monomers in the presence of a catalyst that supports living or quasi-living polymerization

Background Gradient, or tapered, copolymers have a chemical structure with a gradual change of composition along the polymer chain from one monomer unit to another. Tapered block copolymers are superior to traditional block polymers for many applications, but few methods are available for synthesizing such polymers.
