Better predictions can help scientists researching RNA-based therapeutics. Discoveries in this field could create new treatment options for most human diseases and disorders (About RNA Therapeutics, 2011). Many pharmaceutical companies are investing and developing RNA-based solutions. AVI Bio Pharma recently announced successful Phase I clinical testing for an RNA based therapy for the Ebola virus - an often fatal, and previously untreatable disease (AVI BioPharma's RNA-Based Therapeutics for Treatment of Ebola and Marburg Viruses Show Positive Safety Data in First Five of Six Cohorts of Phase 1 Clinical Studies , 2011). Brief Description of TechnologyThe structures and stabilities of RNAs relate to their biological function and biomedical applications. Vfold is a software package for the computational prediction of RNA structure and stability from nucleotide sequences. Several competing factors determine RNA structural formation (folding) and the stability. The stacking force between the nucleotide bases and the change of conformational entropy upon folding are some examples. Vfold uses a three-vector virtual bond RNA mode to compute the conformation entropy.
