Retroviral expression systems are administered which are capable of expressing the appropriate homeodomain protein. A method of determining whether a chemical compound affects the generation of a motor neuron from a neural stem cell is also provided. The invention provides insights into how extracellular signals are interpreted during the patterning of other vertebrate tissues. The invention further provides a method of treating a subject having a motor neuron injury or a motor neuron disease.
