An object segmentation circuit received depth information for generating object identification signals. An encoder generates a compressed video signal which substantially corresponds to the objects identified by the object identification signals.The method provides techniques that directly utilize three-dimensional shape information in the video compression process, both in the case of field or frame based compression techniques and object-based compression techniques.
