Manipulation of Plasmodesmal Connectivity by Inducible Tissue Specific Expression to Improve Plant Yield and Fitness
Thisinvention enhances drought resistance in transgenic plants of Arabidopsis bymanipulating cell-to-cell connectivity of the plants. Cell-to-cell connectivityin plants is controlled by intercellular channels, plasmodesmata. Plasmodesmalpermeability is modulated by the protein called PDLP5. A mutant form of PDLP5,which functions to subdue the native form of PDLP5 that plants normallyexpress, was created in this invention. Introducing this mutant, PDLP5-m5, into Arabidopsis enhanced the vigorof plant growth and drought resistance. Fig. Displays the early flowering of the Arabidopsis PDLP5-m5 plants. The growth conditions: 24°C/ 22°C, ~70% humidity, 16/8h.
