Novel Environment-Friendly Coatings for Marine Applications
GREEN TECHNOLOGY! Tethering of biocide may reduce leaching of hazardous chemicals. NDSU anti-fouling coatings improve fuel economy for marine vessels. Prevent or reduce fouling of ship hulls and other surfaces by aquatic organisms. Effective anti-fouling properties.
This NDSU technology is an anti-fouling material for use in a marine environment which includes a copolymer having a carbon and/or silicone backbone with a pendant biocidal group, as well as an optional pendant fouling release group. The figure on the right shows an example of marine testing (20-day immersion) on two NDSU coating compositions as compared to two commercially available compositions.

Title: Polymeric materials with anti-fouling activity
Usefulness: Polymeric materials with anti-fouling activity
Summary: The block/random copolymer is used in biocidal composition (claimed) to prevent fouling of structure exposed to a water environment, e.g. surfaces of ships such as the hull, offshore marine structures such as oil rigs, sea water conduit systems for seaside plants, buoys, heat-exchangers, cooling towers, de-salination equipment, filtration membranes, and docks. They are used as an anti-fouling material for forming an anti-fouling coating used to impede or suppress the adhesion of aquatic organisms (e.g. Enteromorpha spores, Hydroids Elegans (tube worms), bacteria, germs, microbes, biofilms, crustaceans, tube worms, cyprid larvae, grasses, clams, oysters, and/or barnacles), to the coated surface and/or facilitate ready release of the organisms from the surface. The water environment is e.g. marine environment and freshwater environment.
Novelty: New block/random copolymer used in biocidal composition to prevent fouling of structure exposed to water environment, e.g. surfaces of ships e.g. hull, offshore marine structures e.g. oil rigs, and seaside plants sea water conduit systems
