B-11 Biopesticide Comprised of Ladybug

Technology Benefits

ΓùÅ High public acceptance: Novel RNAi technique differs from gene modification and is easily accepted by public.ΓùÅ Eco-friendly: The ΓÇ£winglessΓÇØ ladybugsΓÇÖ offspring will have normal wings. No harmful effects to the ecosystem are expected. ΓùÅ Specifically targeted: This methods targets only wing development and has no effect on other characters of the ladybug. ΓùÅ Versatile: This technique can be widely applied to other pest-predators.

Technology Application

ΓùÅ Biological control agentΓùÅ Aphid species control, Eco-friendly pest killers

Detailed Technology Description

The researchers identified master control genes for ladybug wing development. They used a larval RNA interference (RNAi) technique to disrupt the function of the gene and impede the development of wings during the pupal state. The resulting ladybugsΓÇÖ wings are too small to fly, while other characters such as the ladybugΓÇÖs feeding behavior and voracious appetite remained unchanged.
