Solar assisted heat pump

Summary
The patented heat pump puts together two different technologies: the technology of air-to-water heat pump and the technology of hybrid photovoltaic-thermal solar collectors.
Technology Benefits
Compared to a traditional heat pump, the proposed solar assisted heat pump: 1. Properly operates even without solar radiation; 2. Achieves better energy performance with the same useful effect when solar radiation is available; 3. Reduces the energy drawn from the grid; 4. Allows the hybrid photovoltaic-thermal solar collect to achieve higher efficiencies too; 5. Reduces the amount of energy required for evaporator defrosting operation.

Detailed Technology Description
The patented heat pump puts together two different technologies: the technology of air-to-water heat pump and the technology of hybrid photovoltaic-thermal solar collectors. The linking element is the special, triple-fluid (water-air-refrigerant) evaporator where, besides the traditional refrigerant circuit, an additional circuit for a simultaneous water flow rate is found. This water circuit is connected to a field of hybrid solar collectors where a contemporary water temperature increase and electricity production occurs. While flowing through the triple-fluid evaporator, the hot water coming from the solar collectors rejects heat to the air.In this way, the average temperature of the air flowing through the same evaporator increases, resulting in an improvement of the energy performance of the heat pump. The power produced by the field of hybrid photovoltaic-thermal solar collectors is used to feed the heat pump reducing the electricity drawn from the grid or allowing its autonomous operation.
