Subwavelength Waveguide and Delay Line with Fractal Cross Sections具有分形截面的亞波長波導及延遲線

Summary

In conventional metallic waveguides, the transverse dimension of the waveguide determines the cut-off frequency for the transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. This means the larger the transverse dimension of the waveguide, the longer the wavelength of the guided waves. Hence, it may not be practical for long-wavelength microwave or radio waves to have EM waveguides.

This invention shows the method in which the microwaves or radio-frequency waves can be guided in their propagation through channels whose cross sections contain fractal patterns, with relevant dimensions much smaller than the wavelengths of the guided waves. Such waveguides would be sub-wavelength in all cross sectional dimensions, thereby allowing compact designs for guided propagation of long-wavelength EM waves. Maximum transmission magnitude (~100%) can be nearly achieved with efficient coupling. Experiments show a piece of fractal slits can exhibit fairly sizable delay.

The invention can be applied for telecommunication device and reduce the size of waveguides.
