Method and Apparatus for the Control of Injection Molding
Injection molding relies on the correct identification for the timing of the transfer from injection velocity control to packing pressure control with a production of a quality article. Problems with the criteria used in current procedures include: leakage of melt and variations in melt temperature caused by melt density (for volume-based criteria); increase in tooling costs, introduce undesirable marks on surface of molded parts, and so on (for pressure-based criteria). In both cases, the operator has to be very skilled in interpreting and drawing relationships between injection velocity, melt temperature, materials and mold geometry, in order to understand the molding conditions. Changes in molding conditions require reconsideration of the predetermined threshold, and so involves extensive trial and error process.
The new apparatus and method applies fuzzy inference technique to injection molding, and by means of nozzle pressure or cavity pressure data collected, automatically determine a suitable time for transfer from injection velocity control to packing pressure control. This therefore avoids most of the above-mentioned problems.
