The New Medical Uses of Fructus Ligustri Lucidii for Calcium Metabolism and its Pharmaceutical Formulations

Summary

In a previous patent filed in 2007, we have disclosed that Fructus Ligustri Lucidii (FLL) could improve the calcium balance in normal and ovariectomized rats. It also improved the intestinal absorption of calcium and its re-absorption in kidney. It also improved the quality of the bones. Based on this discovery, we conducted further studies and found that the serum 1,25(OH) D 2 3(active form of Vit D) was elevated by the administration of FLL extract, and proved that FLL acted on the 1-alpha hydroxylase of the kidney, both in in vitro and in vivo settings. The ethyl acetate fraction was found to be the major active fraction and the total water extract demonstrated this activity. The invention indicated that FLL and its extract could increase the synthesis of the active form of Vit D, 1,25(OH) D , and that it can be used as a pharmaceutical preparation for improving 2 3calcium balance.
