Northwestern researchers have developed a method to accomplish genome editing in human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). This method uses ribonucleic acids (RNAs) as a guide for targeting genes of interest. Current methods are cumbersome and time-consuming. They require that a pair of proteins be designed, expressed and validated for each gene that is to be edited.Prof. Sontheimer and his colleagues have developed a simple and fast genome editing method that not only requires less reagents but also exhibits higher targeting efficiencies. This new technology offers a useful tool to discovery more stem cell-based therapies.
