Soft Rotary Actuators

Detailed Technology Description
Basic configuration and sequential actuation for subgroups of embedded bladders for two types of rotary actuatorsInvention Summary: Rutgers researchers have invented a novel rotary mechanism – a soft rotary actuator – based on peristaltic motion of elastomeric materials, which consists of an inflatable stator paired with a rotor. Timed inflation and deflation of the air-filled channels in the stator enable the rotation of the rotor. This invention can extend the potential functionality of soft robotic systems and machines by providing rotational torque without requiring bending or twisting. This technology could also enable novel flexible mobile vehicles that are pneumatically actuated. Market Applications: Soft RoboticsMedical DevicesFlexible Mobile VehiclesSearch and Rescue EquipmentAdvantages: Unique wheel and axle configuration that may allow for passive suspensions in wheeled vehiclesMotor rotation without bending/twistingSoft, metal-free motors suitable for harsh environments with electromagnetic fieldsCan withstand mechanical impact Intrinsically safer for human/machine interactionIntellectual Property & Development Status: Patent pending. Available for licensing and/or research collaboration.
