Small Diameter Laparoscopic Tool Docking Mechanism

Technology Benefits
Minimizes the likelihood of scarring, Minimizes the likelihood of postoperative pain, Allows the use of standard size tips, Allows flexibility
Detailed Technology Description
USF researchers developed a device that will allow the surgeon to use a variety of standard size laparoscopic tips without compromising tip size or force capability. It is a small diameter device of 1.6mm (or smaller) outer shaft that contains a concentric moveable rod or wire. This is inserted through a small incision and docked (connected) to a standard laparoscopic surgery tip within the abdominal cavity. The tip is introduced into the body through a larger opening in the patientΓÇÖs umbilicus. After surgery, the devices are disconnected (undocked) within the abdominal cavity and each removed via the route of introduction. This does not leave a visible postsurgery scar except the umbilicus scar which was always there prior to surgery.
