Peptide-Based Materials

Technology Benefits
Large-scale polypeptide production in renewable sourcesPractical application in materials design
Technology Application
fabrication of polymer & polymer-based materials
Detailed Technology Description
The key innovation of this technology is based on the limited amino acid sequence diversity displayed by high-performance elastic proteins ΓÇô e.g. elastin, resilin and spidroin. The data imply that sequence composition alone will be sufficient to account for some aspects of the physical properties of protein materials, especially rubber-like elasticity. This methodology will therefore have exceptional potential in achieving sustainability in some areas of materials manufacture, competing ever more effectively with existing chemical and physical systems with regard to cost and function in the areas of materials production, eliminating unnecessary consumption of non-renewable resources, reducing non-biodegradable waste, reducing the timescale for degradation of some packaging materials and possibly contributing to the functionality of biomedical materials.
*Abstract
The University of South Florida has developed novel bio-inspired polymeric materials. Applications include high-performance materials, biomedical materials, materials for in-vitro cell and tissue culture, edible materials and biodegradable non-medical materials. The polymers are random polypeptides of known amino acid composition. The polymers can be produced at the manufacturing scale by chemical methods or by biological methods.
