- *Abstract
-
Inhibition of signaling by the protein Signal Transducers and Activators of Transcription 3 (STAT3) is a promising means by which to prevent and treat certain cancers. Experiments have shown that, unlike normal cells, cancer cells require continuous activation of STAT3. STAT3 binds to specific cancer proteins that activate and transport it to the cell nucleus where it continuously expresses genes necessary for cancerous growth. Inhibitors of STAT3 kill cancer cells but have no effect on normal cells. Therefore, the administration of effective STAT3 inhibitors has tremendous potential to prevent and treat cancer.
