High voltage electrochemical oxidation technology to form decorative and hardwearing aluminium oxide coatings on aluminium alloys
- Technology Benefits
- The high voltage electrochemical oxidation (HVEO) developed by the Belarus R&D institute allows to create coating on products from aluminium alloys with following properties:- hardness up to 8 GPa- roughness < 0,05 µm- thickness up to 70 µm,compared to properties of traditional anodizing or micro-arc oxidation (MAO) method:- hardness up to 6 GPa- roughness < 0,2 µm- thickness up to 40 µm.
- Detailed Technology Description
- The R&D institute from Belarus specialising in industrial technologies developed the high voltage electrochemical oxidation (HVEO) method for treatment of aluminium and its alloys.Surface treatment of components made from light-weight materials such as aluminium or magnesium is required to improve corrosion resistance and wear resistance. The anodising or micro-arc oxidation (MAO) methods used today create protective coatings on aluminium and its alloys with following properties:- hardness up to 6 GPa- roughness < 0,2 µm- thickness up to 40 µm.HVEO method is a transition process between traditional oxidation and full micro-arc oxidation, which is implemented by supplying a pulsed current with voltage up to 520 V during the oxidation process. Application of pulses with different shape and duration allows increasing the growth rate of the oxide film, its microhardness and corrosion resistance. The coating properties achieved by HVEO are:- hardness up to 8 GPa- roughness < 0,05 µm- thickness up to 70 µm.HVEO is used to harden rings of the fuel pumps, watch cases, mobile phone cases made from aluminium, etc., also for blanks of printed circuit boards based on aluminium, as substrates for LED lamps and others. The institute is looking for industrial partner from metalworking industry interested in using the technology for treatment of its aluminium or aluminium alloy products under commercial agreement with technical assistance or license agreement; industrial partner or R&D organisation interested in improving or adapting the technology to the specific needs under research cooperation agreement.
