A 3D pointing device that can be used in the air - 1950

*Abstract

Overview

Most modern 2D pointing devices are surface-independent,meaning that a specific surface type is not required, although some type ofsurface is.  As an optical mouse moves overa surface, its displacement is detected by LEDs on its bottom.  Optical mice outperform alternative inputdevices like trackballs and touchpads in certain tasks, such as 2D or 3D drawingand “flying” in multi-dimensional space as during gaming.  Optical mice are also used to control smartTVs.

UK researchers are developing a device andsoftware that eliminates the need for the mouse to come in contact with asurface.  Users can now operate the mousein the air or “on the fly.”

Invention

UK researchers are developing a single-lensvideo recording device, which is a mouse-like device that can perform pointingfunction but without a displacement detection system, meaning that it does notneed to be in contact with a surface for its movement to be measured by itssupporting software.  The device hasthree sets of light sources, controlled by actuators that differentiallyactivate one or more sets of light.  The positionsof the lights emitted are detected as the pointing device moves, and that datais translated into information about where the pointing device is positioned ina 3-dimensional space.
