Onion Size Measurement Through Postharvest 3D Imaging
- Detailed Technology Description
- Size is an essential quality attribute which needs to bemeasured in postharvest sorting, packing, and shipping of onions. Additionally, the lower content of natural disease inhibitors in Vidalia onions makes propersorting and grading even more important. Currently available methods ofmeasuring onion volume and density are not available, with only 2D scanningtechnology widely available.
- *Abstract
-
This invention from Dr. Charlie Li measures sweet onion diameter, volume, and density in a nondestructive manner by using imaging methods based on an RGB-depth (RGB-D) sensor. Using patent-pending algorithms, the system is able to estimate onion diameter to 99.14% accuracy and onion density accuracy to 96.1%.
Other Advantages- The scanning mechanism could also be adapted for use with squash, bell peppers, tomatoes, potatoes, and many other fruits and vegetables
