- Detailed Technology Description
- Researchers at UCLA have developed a spark gap using a “cassette” of high dielectric material for pulsed laser applications. The spark gap is 10-100x thinner than atmospheric/gas switches, has a fast response time, and creates greater charge carrier density while retaining the repeatability of vacuum tube switches. Rep rates in excess of 10 Hz are expected.

Background
Atmospheric spark gaps can rapidly switch to high voltages and currents for certain pulsed power applications, including pulsed lasers. Current spark gap limitations include long response times, timing jitters, and large physical space requirements. Triggered vacuum tubes and dielectric breakdown have addressed these limitations but these technologies are expensive or have short lifetimes.
