*Abstract

This new wearable technology integrates micro-scale tubing into apparel fabric in order to cool or heat the individual wearer. The system moves warmer or cooler air through the micro-tubes to regulate the individual’s temperature. This advanced wearable technology does not compromise comfort, mobility or fashion, and is washable after the electronic components are easily removed.

The clothing system allows individuals to control their temperature in buildings too warm or cold for their own personal comfort. In addition, this individualized cooling is a more energy efficient way of achieving a comfortable temperature for each person. With its occupants utilizing this wearable technology, the neutral band temperature of a building can be warmer or cooler, depending on the season, saving up to 15% in heating, ventilation and air conditioning energy consumption. In addition, this technology can be utilized by athletes, firefighters and other individuals whose hobbies or profession would be improved with greater control of their own temperature.

Potential Applications

  • Reducing energy consumption of HVAC

  • Individualized temperature and comfort control

Advantages

  • Up to 15% savings in HVAC energy
  • Lightweight; no compromise in comfort and mobility
  • 100% washable after detaching the electronic components
  • Minimal impact on personal fashion choices
