- *Abstract
-
Cornell inventors have designed a remotesensing, steerable device for the delivery of a therapeutic solution. Thedevice includes an elongated needle which the physician may steer by assertinga tensioning force on a steering cable coupled to the needle toward its distalend. An axially-slidable steering sleeve is disposed about the needle and thesteering cable, and the position of the steering sleeve may be adjusted tocontrol the radius of flexure of the needle. The needle body is flexible enoughto maneuver around thoracic and cardiac geometry, yet sufficiently rigid tofacilitate such maneuvering. The needle may also have a stop, or platform, spaced from the distal needle tip to stabilize the needle in the cardiactissue.
The inventors have designed a device inaccordance with teachings of this invention for the use in delivering atherapeutic solution to the tissue of a heart. This device can be utilized todeliver therapeutic solutions to an area of ischemic heart tissue withoutnecessitating open-chest surgery.
PotentialApplications
Delivering therapeutic solutions to a remoteorgan and tissue
Advantages
- The device can beeasily controlled and efficiently maneuvered
- Minimally invasive
- The device can bemodified from “off the shelf” instruments, therefore it’s less expensive tomanufacture
