*Abstract

Ring resonators are versatile elements with variousapplications ranging from telecommunication and sensing to basic scientificresearch. Achieving simultaneous low power consumption and highfrequency operation of silicon resonator modulators is challenging since themodulation frequency is limited by the resonator linewidth. This difficultyhinders the utilization of these modulators in extremely high frequency (20 –300 GHz) microwave photonic applications such as high speed analogcommunication and signal processing. However, the compactness, low drivevoltage and low electrical power consumption in the silicon resonatormodulators still make them attractive compared to alternative resonatormodulator architectures such as Mach-Zehnder interferometer-basedresonator modulator architectures.

The new silicon ring modulator was designed and demonstrated to operateabove the resonance frequency linewidth by inducing efficient photonictransitions between the adjacent free-spectral-range resonance modes. In particular,a silicon ring modulator operation of high frequency (20 GHz) modulation in aring resonator with resonance linewidth of 11.7 GHz was demonstrated with muchlower power consumption compared to a standard silicon ring modulator.

Potential Applications: Telecommunications, including high speed analog communications and signal processing
