MOP-Cellulose Fibers for Selective Absorption

Detailed Technology Description
Functional fibers capable of selectively absorbing gases and toxic chemicals were fabricated, and a way to chemically attach metal-organic polyhedras (MOP) to cellulose based fibers was devised to form these new functionalized fibers.

*Abstract

Functional fibers capable of selectively absorbing gases and toxic chemicals were fabricated, and a way to chemically attach metal-organic polyhedras (MOP) to cellulose based fibers was devised to form these new functionalized fibers. Due to their gas sorption properties MOPs are a focus of research for a range of applications such as serving as host molecules for gases and other molecules. High porosity allows the host molecules to be captured into the MOP structure, where they can be part of a selective chemical reaction. This invention creates for the first time a way to attach MOPs to cellulose fibers through irreversible chemical bonding, opening a new avenue for producing active filtration media from renewable materials.

Potential applications: Selective filters for specific gases, toxic compounds, etc.

Advantages:

  • Made from readily available and renewable materials
  • Extends the utility of MOPs to a range of applications
