-
An autonomous aerial robot was created that uses water topropel the device and release pressurized water streams frommultiple outputs, for use in extinguishing fires and other applications for water delivery to inaccessible areas. The device can be remotely controlled by an operator and/or computer, or controlled autonomously by an onboard computer. Addition of accelerometers, magnetometers, GPS, cameras, sensors and other inertial navigation systems will allow the system to autonomously stabilize or maneuver. The device can be used wherever water is needed in hazardous or difficult situations, such as fire extinguishing or irrigation, or for recreation.
A prototype system was built and hydraulically propelled on three legs to a height of 1.2 meters, and controlled via GPS, machine vision, and robot-mounted and base-station computers.
Potential Applications:- Fire extinguishing to unreachable areas, e.g. ship interiors
- Water toys and games
- Transporting materials via the device
- Cleaning inaccessible areas, e.g. pipes, tall buildings, hazardous materials
- Mining to remotely deliver water to the mining site
- Search and rescue by attaching a camera to the device
- Home or commercial lawn watering
- Aerial irrigation
Advantages:- Delivers water to areas which are otherwise unreachable, e.g. tight spaces, wreckages, fires, etc.
- Autonomous operation prevents risk to operators from entering hazardous environments
- Multiple configurations and delivery points possible
