- *Abstract
-
This software produces "audio documents" by outputting computer print files to a voice synthesizer. ASTER is capable of utilizing the structural information in a document encoded in a "mark-up" language, such as Tex, Latex, or SGML, to produce more sophisticated speech. For example, items of a list may be punctuated with a beep, and italicized words may be spoken in a higher pitch. ASTER is interactive, allowing the listener to move within a document using cross-references and bookmarks. Different speaking rules are available, such as very wordy or very terse. A document overview can be obtained by directing ASTER to read only section titles. Besides audio books, ASTER will have far-reaching effects in reading complex electronic mail over a phone, listening to complex electronic data, enabling better voice interaction with computers and telecommunication industry.
