*Abstract

Cornell researchers have developed a micron-scale, high bit rate electro-optic modulator capable of operation over a wide temperature range. Unlike current modulators that are very temperature sensitive, this new device has been demonstrated at 1 Gbit/second with a quality factor of approximately 4000 over a 15 K temperature range. Capable of being manufactured in a standard industrial silicon CMOS fabrication facility, the device can be integrated into microchips to enable data rates exceeding 100 billion bits per second.
