*Abstract

Cornell researchers have developed a method to schedule and perform transmissions in a manner that a network system's multipacket reception (MPR) ability is effectively harnessed and channel conditions are favorably exploited through carrier sensing and collision detection.  The invention is the first to claim methods for implementing CSMA and CSMA/CD over an MPR-capable physical layer and that they achieve the cross-layer cooperation philosophy, all of which prior art has failed to capture.  Since CSMA is used in the IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standards and other wireless networks, improving its performances could have widespread benefits.

Potential Applications

  • Networking, particularly wireless

Advantages

  • Greatly enhanced network performance
  • Full harnessing of MPR
