*Abstract

The invention is an optomechanical gyroscope to relieve thebandwidth and sensitivity constraints of MEMS gyroscopes utilizing the effect oflaser dynamic-back-action upon a high-quality-factor (Q) mechanical resonator. By using theradiation pressure of light, the gyroscope's bandwidth is improved withoutpaying the penalty of reduced signal to noise ratio. Meanwhile, the radiationforce is also used to drive the oscillating motion of the MEMS gyroscope.

The proposed technology can be applied to any mechanicalresonator within a vibratory gyroscope to release the bandwidth and sensitivityconstraints of the resonator, while providing a driving force for theorthogonal driving mode resonator. Several exemplary embodiments of theresonators include planar disk resonators, ring resonators, spring-massresonators and spherical resonator.
