*Abstract

This invention presents a way to generate multi-phase resonant signals while minimizing phase noise by using passive devices in a single high-order LC resonator. The novel oscillator can achieve low phase noise by avoiding transistors used for coupling, which deteriorate phase noise significantly. This provides a systematic way of trading power for phase noise, while synthesizing multiple phases.

Potential Commercial Applications:

  • Radio, telecommunications, computers and other electronic applications using phase-locked loops (PLLs) and frequency synthesizers,e.g.
    • wireless transceivers
    • phased arrays
    • parallel analog-to-digital converter, etc.

Advantages:

  • Maintains low phase-noise performance equivalent to single-stage LC oscillator while generating multi-phase resonant signals.
  • Resonant frequency increases with number of stages, making the design more suitable for high frequency applications
