Sleep Apnea Device with ball valve design

Technology Benefits
· Effective · Minimally obstructive, easy to use · Inexpensive · Portable · Quickly adaptable · Disposable
Detailed Technology Description
Hundreds of millions of patients worldwide are afflicted with sleep apnea. Repeated apneas and arousals deprive patients of deep-stage sleep which lead to chronic daytime exhaustion and long-term cardiovascular stress. Current treatment methods include the use of continuous or automatic positive airway pressure devices (CPAP, BiPAP), where the patient has to wear an onerous plastic facial mask connected by a tube to bedside machine or surgery. Oral appliances, commonly known as mandibular advancement splint, are currently emerging as a means of treatment, but are only limited to patients with mild to moderate sleep apnea.  UCI has created an inexpensive, small, easily mass-produced, and noninvasive device promoting regular and normal breathing in persons suffering from sleep disorders. The device sits comfortably at the nostrils and regulates the breathing process without causing irritation to the patient. Such advantages promote better quality sleep, while reducing both the operational and financial burdens to the patient.
