Method for Efficient Management of Multi-Dimensional Data
- Technology Benefits
- Efficiently stores and searches multi-dimensional data without distorting relationships among data
- Technology Application
- Database management systems Geographical information systems (GIS) Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) Data warehousing Multimedia management This technology is available for licensing.
- Detailed Technology Description
- Researchers at the University of California, Santa Barbara have developed a novel method for providing for effective management of data that are inherently multi-dimensional (e.g., geographic, multi-media). This method also deals with the efficient storage and management of linear data having multiple attributes using novel buffer techniques to queue data while queries are processed.

Title: Buffering a hierarchical index of multi-dimensional data
Usefulness: Buffering a hierarchical index of multi-dimensional data
Summary: For managing databases e.g. relation databases in computer networks such as LAN, Internet. Also for use in CAD/CAM, GIS system and multimedia communication.
Novelty: Computer implemented data management method in computer network relational system, involves storing nodes representing index of each multidimensional data item repeatedly with respect to storage limits

Background
Present database management schemes are poorly suited for managing data that are multi-dimensional in nature. The techniques for (indexing, storing, retrieving, etc.) multi-dimensional data often involve attempts to translate the data into a single dimension so that existing systems may be used. These techniques, however, fail to maintain important spatial relationships, thus adversely affecting the ability to respond rapidly to multi-dimensional queries.
