- Technology Application
- Dental extraction, oral surgery, dental implants and specialized dentistry
- Detailed Technology Description
- Tooth extraction is a common procedure in dentistry. Simple extraction can oftentimes require incision of soft tissue. The typical procedure for simple extraction uses extraction forceps and elevators to remove erupted teeth. In some cases a simple extraction is not possible and requires a surgical approach. The current solutions to this problem include surgical intervention, development of novel forceps to improve the mechanical energy transferred to the tooth, ultrasound, use of lasers for periodontal scaling and pulsed laser to destroy and trim away ligaments along the tooth root, achieving atraumatic extractions. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine have developed a unique technique for the purpose of aiding tooth extraction and tooth movement.
