Techniques and concepts that can generate significant reductions in skin friction drag (i.e., drag associated with the convective motion of fluid over the solid surface of a vehicle, machine, etc.) are of vital importance to fuel economy, vehicle design, and optimization of most fluid-based systems and sub-systems. Fluid dynamic drag generally stems from one of only two sources: so-called pressure drag (drag associated with pressure), and skin friction drag. The concept described and evaluated below is aimed at reducing or eliminating skin friction drag within defined regions on surfaces exposed to fluid flow.
