This invention is about the development of a computer automated method of surface reconstruction from dexel data. The invented surface reconstruction method includes a novel contour generation algorithm, a novel contour combination algorithm, and a novel technique of constructing the 3D model’s boundary surface from three orthogonal sets of contours utilizing a surface tiling algorithm. The contour generation algorithm converts the dexel data into planar contours. The contour combination algorithm combines the two sets of contours on the same planar slices into one set of contours with improved accuracy. The surface tiling algorithm is utilized to generate triangular facets from the three orthogonal sets of contours. The developed method is faster than other methods such as the voxel-based method, and the reconstructed surface is more accurate than the surface reconstructed from voxel representation using the marching cube algorithm. The reconstructed triangular surface data can be visualized from any orientations by using common computer graphics routines. The developed surface reconstruction method is useful to industrial and medical automation for applications such as NC machining simulation, virtual sculpting, and dental restoration.
