*Abstract
Summary of Invention - Patent Application: The present invention relates to a glass composition useful for sealing and joining solid oxide fuel cell device components. The glass composition includes between about 45 mol % to about 55 mol % RO; between about 5 mol % to about 10 mol % M2O3; and between 40 mol % to about 45 mol % SiO2, where R is selected from the group including strontium, calcium, magnesium and zinc and combinations thereof and M is selected from the group including aluminum, boron, iron, and combinations thereof. ZnO is typically present in an amount of at least about 5 mol %.One object of the present invention is to provide an improved glassy fuel cell sealant composition. Related objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description.Non-confidential Abstract of Invention: A novel family of ‘invert’ alkaline earth/zinc-silicate glasses have been developed that could be used for hermetic seals for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). The glasses wet and bond to a variety of different materials used to produce SOFC’s, including Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) and Fe/Cr-alloys used for interconnections, at or below 900 degrees Celsius. With the appropriate heat treatment, the glasses convert to crystalline pyrosilicate phases that possess coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) comparable to YSZ. Long-term (up to 28 days) isothermal heat treatments indicate that the properties of the glass-ceramics are thermally stable and no significant reaction products are found at the seal interfaces. These new glasses can be sealed at lower temperatures and appear to possess better thermal stabilities than other glass-ceramics proposed for hermetic seals in SOFC’s.
