Abstract of US Patent Application 20040170692 - Calcium phosphate bodies and a process for making calcium phosphate bodies: Among the various aspects of the present invention is a process for making calcium phosphate bodies comprising amorphous calcium phosphate, hydroxyapatite or calcium triphosphate, the bodies themselves and the use of such bodies in any of a variety of applications.Non-confidential Abstract of Invention: A process is disclosed for preparing hydroxyapatite (HAp) bodies through the chemical reaction of a calcium containing borate glass with an aqueous solution containing PO4^3+, CO3^2-, and other ions. The HAp particles formed by this process retain the size and shape of the initial glass particles. Depending upon the size, shape, and calcium content of the starting glass, hollow or solid HAp bodies can be formed. Hollow microspheres and fibers of various sizes have been formed by this process. The chemical composition of the aqueous solutions can be altered to form other stable apatites, such as carbonated hydroxyapatites and fluoroapatites. Controlled amounts of cationic substitution in HAp can be achieved by adding the desired cations to the starting glass. These HAp particles are useful for controlled release drug delivery vehicles, as a filler in bioactive composites for bone repair, ion exchange filters, as contrast agents in acoustic imaging, chromatography columns, and other biomedical applications.
