Improved method for recovering DNA from trace evidence

Summary
OSU researchers have enhanced DNArecovery from trace evidence, by improving on an existing recovery technique(basic sample). This invention incorporates a glass fiber filter which is wettedwith a high salt extraction buffer in order to recover trace evidence. Throughthis method, the DNA present is simultaneously liberated from the cells andbound to the filter quantitatively, creating maximum recovery of usable DNA intrace evidence.
Technology Benefits
·        Significantly improves DNA yield from trace evidence
Technology Application
·        DNA typing applications

*Background
Methods for extracting DNA frombiological samples have continued to improve since the late 1980s. Theseextraction procedures, also known as DNA typing, have enabled DNA recovery fromfluids that harbor large amounts of DNA (e.g., blood, saliva, semen). However, present methods do not work well in cases that have less DNA evidence available(e.g., DNA typing of weapons and explosive debris). In cases that only have afingerprint of evidence, there are lower levels of reliability in producing asuccessful DNA profile. Therefore, in respect to investigation and prosecutionof crime, improved DNA typing methods are still needed for successful DNAprofiling.
