Jessell Ph.D.Methods for generating genetically engineered neurons for treating subjects having a motor neuron injury or a motor neuron disease are described.The method involves implanting genetically engineered neural cells in the injured/diseased neural tissue of the subject. Retroviral expression systems are administered which are capable of expressing the appropriate homeodomain protein. A method of determining whether a chemical compound affects the generation of a motor neuron from a neural stem cell is also provided. The invention provides insights into how extracellular signals are interpreted during the patterning of other vertebrate tissues. The invention further provides a method of treating a subject having a motor neuron injury or a motor neuron disease.
