*Abstract

Professor John Rogers of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has developed device component geometries and fabrication methods to enhance the electronic performance of devices based on thin films of randomly oriented or partially aligned semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). In these designs and methods, fine lines are cut into the random network of SWNTS that serve as the semiconducting layer of devices. These network strips are engineered to eliminate the deleterious effects of transporting, shorting pathways caused by the metallic SWNTs mixed in with the semiconducting SWNTs.

Exploring this method, integrated circuits can be printed onto plastic substrates with performance that rivals that of single-crystal silicon. The fabrication strategy and geometries that can be applied in thin film electronics, microelectronics, and flexible electronics. The methods are compatible with low temperature solution-based processing and with a wide range of device substrates and are easily integrated into existing manufacturing methods.
